The Light of Long Island

Long Island, NY, has countless sprawling entertainment venues, hip restaurants, and other modern attractions. However, sometimes the most impressive places to visit are the ones that have stood the test of time, like Montauk Point Lighthouse.

Although not the tallest on Long Island, Montauk Point Lighthouse still stands above the rest. Built in 1796 due to an order from the Second Congress under President George Washington, this lighthouse is the oldest in New York and the fourth-oldest active one in the United States. It even was part of the Eastern Coast Defense Shield in World War II. The U.S. Army considered the area susceptible to German U-Boat attacks, so soldiers scouted from the lighthouse and had a large arsenal of gun power just south of the lighthouse at Fort Hero.

Tour the Lighthouse

After seeing centuries of history pass, this beacon still faithfully lights the way for boats. The light flashes every five seconds and can be seen up to 19 nautical miles away. It’s also one of the few lighthouses on Long Island that allows you to climb to the top. With 137 stairs to ascend, the beautiful panoramic view definitely makes the climb worthwhile. Even getting to the lighthouse is fun—you’ll see miles and miles of beautiful beaches and coastland along the way. If you’re in the area, make sure to tour this National Historic Landmark.

If you need a way to get to the lighthouse, Empire Rent a Car can help. We offer van rentals, SUV rentals, and car rentals that can get you to Montauk Point Lighthouse and beyond. We have several locations throughout New York, including one in Long Island City. Make a reservation, or contact us today at (800) 750-8782 with any questions. We look forward to serving you.
