Dinosaurs Invade the Bronx Zoo

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to come face to face with a Tyrannosaurus rex? How about a hungry raptor? This summer head to the Bronx Zoo and get ready for a trip back in time.

The Bronx Zoo Dinosaur Safari is underway, transporting families into a world of snarling, roaring, and moving dinosaurs from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods. To begin this interactive experience, visitors ride in wooden wagons through a wooded, two-acre area of the zoo that’s normally off limits. During this 20-minute ride, you’ll experience over 24 life-size animatronic dinosaurs that move, snarl, roar, and gnash their teeth.

Some of these lifelike beasts are up to 45 feet long and 25 feet tall, complete with sharp teeth, menacing claws, and eyes that move. This exhibit resurrects all of the favorite dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops, and even a dilophosaurus that spits water at you.

These phenomenal dinosaurs were created by Billings Productions, a company located in Allen, Texas. Billings Productions leases these magical beasts for events and exhibits worldwide.

Bronx Zoo director, Jim Breheny, explained how unique the setup at the Bronx Zoo is.

“Nobody does it like this,” said Breheny. “(Other sites) have them in tents on carpet behind velvet ropes. We really did it up to make it an immersive experience. We transport you back 300 million years,” (as cited in a press release by Barry Paddock in the New York Daily News).

This limited exhibit began late May and runs until September 8.
