2026 FIFA World Cup

The Best Routes to MetLife Stadium

Getting to MetLife Stadium for a FIFA World Cup 2026 match is an experience worth planning in advance. Empire Rent A Car has been helping New York-area travelers navigate since 1970, and knowing your route options before match day makes the difference between arriving relaxed and arriving stressed. Here is what every driver heading to the stadium should know ahead of time.

The Primary Route: Route 3 West From the Lincoln Tunnel

Most visitors staying in Manhattan will cross via the Lincoln Tunnel and take Route 3 West directly to the stadium. This is the most direct path from Midtown and works well during normal traffic conditions. On match day, expect significant congestion along this corridor. Departing at least 90 minutes before kickoff is strongly recommended. The stadium is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, approximately eight miles from the Lincoln Tunnel exit.

Alternative Route: New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 16W

Travelers coming from Newark, the airports, or points south have a cleaner approach via the New Jersey Turnpike. Exit 16W connects to Route 3 East toward the stadium. This route avoids midtown Manhattan entirely and is often faster for fans coming from the Newark or Jersey City areas. It is also a practical option for fans whose accommodations are south of the city.

From Brooklyn or Queens: George Washington Bridge Route

Fans traveling from the outer boroughs can take the George Washington Bridge to the upper level, then follow I-95 South to Route 17 South, connecting to Route 3 East toward the stadium. This route adds distance but avoids the tunnel congestion that builds heavily on match days. Budget extra time regardless of which borough you are departing from.

Parking and Arrival Strategy

MetLife Stadium offers extensive on-site parking. Pre-purchasing a parking pass before match day is strongly recommended. Stadium parking lots fill quickly, and cash-only lots nearby tend to charge premium prices on World Cup match days. Arriving 90 minutes early provides comfortable buffer time for parking, security, and getting to your seats.
