Navigating Tolls and Fees When Renting a Car in NYC

Whether you’re visiting New York City, NY, or just need a rental car while you’re here, navigating tolls is key to ensuring a smooth and successful trip. From bridge tolls to congestion charges, Empire Rent A Car is here to help you navigate tolls when renting a car in NYC.

Bridge Tolls

If you plan on driving your rental car over any of the bridges that connect Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or Long Island, you will be subject to bridge tolls. Bridge tolls can be paid using cash or credit/debit cards. You can also pay through E-ZPass (an electronic system for paying tolls). It’s important to note that E-ZPass does not cover all of the bridges into NYC. So, check your pass for the exact details as to which bridges are covered.

Parking Fees

Parking fees in NYC can vary widely depending on where you park. For example, street parking might cost $2-$3 per hour while garage parking can range from $15-$30 per hour. Even parking on the street can be expensive. Therefore, you'll need to take this into account when planning your trip around the city.

Congestion Charge

If you plan on driving your rental car into Manhattan between 6 am and 8 pm Monday through Friday, then you will have to pay the NYC Congestion Charge fee. This fee can be paid online prior to entering Manhattan or at select locations throughout the city. As a tourist, keep this charge in mind and plan your travels accordingly.
