3 Questions to Ask Before Renting a Car

Has it been a while since you last rented a car? Or, maybe you’re a first-time renter and you aren’t sure how renting a car works. Whatever your situation, our team at Empire Rent A Car has put together a list of great questions to ask before you rent to ensure a great rental experience.

1. When Can I Drop Off?

Before you sign on the dotted line, it's important to find out what the company pick-up and drop-off procedures are. Some companies offer after-outs drop off so you don't have to worry about getting back during regular business hours. However, other companies don't offer this service and if you aren't back by 5 PM, you'll have to pay for another whole day. Find out ahead of time what the policy is and if after-hours is available, and find out the procedure so you know where to leave the car and keys.

2. Will I Have to Pay Tolls?

Toll booths have evolved over the years and you're typically not expected to pay with cash at the booth anymore. Some drivers pay for passes so they can quickly get through toll stations, while other toll booths will record your license plate and bill you later. Typically, in a rental car, toll booth charges will be added to your credit card after you've turned in your rental. However, some rental companies offer special deals regarding toll booths, so make sure to ask ahead of time.

3. Is There a Mileage Limit?

Finally, before you hit the road, make sure to find out if your rental company restricts the amount of miles you are allowed to drive. Some rental companies even have restrictions on where you can travel, such as crossing state lines or country borders. Ask your rental company what limits they have and if there is an unlimited mileage package you can add on. It's always better to find out ahead of time than to pay a penalty later.
