New York City Car Rental and a Rego Park Overview

Rego Park is a neighborhood in Queens that you can visit with your New York City car rental when you are in the area. It is bordered by Elmhurst and Corona to the north, Forest Hill to the south and east, and Middle Village to the west.

Reap what you sow

Rego Park was all farmland until the early 20th century. This area was first settled by Dutch and German farmers who sold their produce in Manhattan. In the 20th century the Real Good Construction Company began to develop the area, which is where the name comes from (REal GOod). Houses were built for $8000 and stores followed on Queens Boulevard and 63rd Drive. Much of the population that moved here was Jewish of Bukharian, Iranian, and Russian ancestry. Today when you drive through with your New York City car rental you will still find a number of synagogues and kosher restaurants. After World War II, many Holocaust survivors settled in the area.

Find something unique

Even today there is still a significant Jewish population, as the families of past immigrants moved to the suburbs, Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union have moved to the area. One thing that is unique that you will find in Rego Park with your New York City car rental is authentic Uzbek food, as many of the Soviet immigrants trace their ethnic roots back to Bukharian Jewish culture. As you drive through the area with your New York City car rental, you may also notice that there are many signs in Russian Cyrillic. This is unique to the area.

Fly to the moon

Many of the houses in Rego Park are done in the colonial and Tudor style with slate roofs. In the area called Crescents this is especially true, where you will find the most expensive real estate in the neighborhood. Real estate is expensive in the area because it is so accessible to Manhattan on 63rd Drive, which is served by the R, G, V, and E subway lines. One interesting thing to note when you visit with your New York City car rental is this is where the CBS sitcom King of Queens was set and sometimes you could see clips of the area in the show.

Shop till you drop

Queens Boulevard runs through Rego Park and there is a lot of shopping along this strip with your New York City car rental. The Rego Park Center is a good place to start. It is a large retail complex that includes a Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond, Circuit City, Marshalls, and Old Navy among other stores. A new shopping center is also under construction across 62nd Drive which will have a Home Depot, Kohl's, and Century 21 department store. There are a number of smaller stores, bakeries, and restaurants to enjoy along 108th Street and 63rd Drive with your New York City car rental. But if you still can't find what you are looking for, Queens Center Mall is located just to the west in Elmhurst with your New York City car rental.
