New York City Rental Car and a Hollis Overview
Hollis is a neighborhood in the southeastern section of Queens. When you visit with your New York City car rental, you will find that is found between the Far Rockaway Branch of the Long Island Railroad to the west, Jamaica Avenue to the north, Francis Lewis Boulevard to the east, and Murdock Avenue to the south. Hollis is located close to the neighborhood of Jamaica.
It's all history
The area that is today Hollis was originally settled by Dutch home setters in the 17th century. It became an important site during the Revolutionary War as part of the site of the Battle of Long Island when Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Woodhull was captured in a tavern on Jamaica Avenue. This was important because the Battle of Long Island was the first major battle during the American Revolution, as well as the first battle that the US army fought in.
The area remained rural until 1885, when developers moved into the area and turned 136 acres into houses. Today, you will still find an area that is primarily made of single family homes when you visit with your New York City car rental.
Rap it up
Since the rise of rap music, Hollis has been a hotbed of talent. When you visit with your New York City car rental, you may see where Russell Simmons and his brother Joseph (a.k.a. Rev Run) grew up. LL Cool J, Young MC, and Ja Rule are also from this neighborhood. Mario Cuomo, former governor of New York is also from here, as is Rev. Al Sharpton and Stephen A. Smith (ESPN sports personality). There is a lot of talent coming out of Hollis, and you never know who you see when you visit with your New York City car rental may one day be the next biggest thing in music.
Visit the neighbors
Next door to Hollis is Jamaica. One Jamaica Center is a mixed-use commercial center that was built in 2002. When you visit with your New York City car rental you will find an Old Navy, Bally Total Fitness, Gap, and 15-screen theater. This is very convenient for you when visiting Hollis to get your shopping needs out of the way or to catch a film. Also found here is the Sutphin Boulevard transit hub that connects the E, J, and Z subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road, and Airtrain JFK, which will give you a direct ride to John F. Kennedy International Airport in 5-7 minutes.
Make a trip to the ocean
Hollis is also near the neighborhood of Far Rockaway, which you can visit with your New York City car rental. Far Rockaway is an oceanfront district with a very unique character. As the farthest district from Manhattan, sometimes you forget you are still in the city when you visit. In the summer you will want to make a stop at Rockaway Beach, which is the largest urban beach in the country.
